We have had it all this month. Cool weather, Hot Weather and rain, rain, rain. Blackberries are very hard to handle in the heat. Driving our harvest windows into the early part of the morning. Typically, with heat brings the droplet reversion onto the Blackberries. This is when we see the black color revert back to a red/purple color. The berries taste sweet and remain juicy. But, for most consumers they will not purchase food that looks different from the grocery store.
Not on our farm! The time for action and education about food consumption is now. Food quality and image has been marketed by big corporations and focuses on a percentage of food that is sold in stores. The farmer throws away produce that will not be excepted by stores and you never see it.
Size, Color, and shape do not always get you the best taste. Try eating an odd, shaped piece of produce. Or an odd color of fruit and see for yourself. Often farmers will discount these kinds of produce, and you still get great tasting food. You know what they say. It's not always in the looks. It's what's inside that counts.
We are still picking into August and are seeing the later varieties start to produce fruit. Nice full plants with giant, sweet blackberries on them.
We are looking at opening our fields to a U-Pick ticket each weekend in August. Let's see!
